Eric Krump passed
away unexpectedly on September 16, 1999 in Boston
at the age of 32. Eric obtained both his B.Sc. (biochemistry,
1989) and Ph.D. (microbiology and immunology, 1995)
from Université Laval where he studied for
five years at the Centre de Recherche en Rhumatologie
et Immunologie (CRRI). Eric carried out his first
post-doctoral fellowship in the laboratory of Dr.
Sergio Grinstein in the Department of Cell Biology
of the Hospital for Sick Children of Toronto. He
was awarded the prestigious Centennial post-doctoral
fellowship from the Medical Research Council of
Canada to pursue his studies at the Division of
Experimental Medicine of the Brigham and Women's
Hospital of Harvard University where he was at the
time of his untimely death. His return to the CRRI
as a faculty member planned for the fall of 2000
was highly anticipated by his friends and colleagues.
Eric's colleagues
in Quebec, Toronto and Boston will all
testify to his great scientific talent and to
the extremely bright career to which he was due.
However, it is his human qualities that deeply
touched and affected the people who had the opportunity
to know him, and that have etched the memory of
his parents, friends and colleagues. We all remember
his kindness, his sense of humor, his ever-present
happy mood, his modesty and his great generosity.
Eric suffered severely from arthritis and those
who were close to him knew that many of the common
every day gestures presented difficulties to him.
Idealist that he was, he had nevertheless chosen
an extremely demanding career in research.
We profoundly miss Eric. We will, however, not
forget him as we have all been deeply touched
by his courage and determination. Eric was a young
man who had an unwavering confidence in himself,
in his friends and in life.
