We are currently studying the role of exosomes in HIV-1 infection and we also develop new molecules blocking virus interaction with specific target cells.

Dr. Gilbert’s research program focuses mainly on the role of exosomes in HIV-1 pathogenesis. This area represents a new approach in the understanding the mechanisms leading to disturbance of the immune response during the first phase of HIV-1 infection. Our objectives are grouped under two themes: the study of mechanisms causing the release of exosomes by dendritic cells, and the analysis of the impact of these nanovesicules on the responses of leucocytes (T and B Lymphocytes, neutrophils and macrophages). This project is funded by IRSC. Another aspect of the research by our team is geared towards applied research and aims at characterizing new molecules that block the interaction between HIV-1 and target cells, a project funded by Pfizer and FRSQ. Finally in collaboration with Dr Tessier we are studying the mechanism of the release of calprotectin, a project funded by IRSC.
