>> REJECTION MECHANISMS AND IMMUNOSUPPRESSORS
IN ALLOGRAFT TRANSPLANTATION
The identification of new antigenic systems as well as better understanding the immune response involved in the rejection phenomenon, are the object of our research. Results of our team, presented at the "14th International HLA Immunogenetics Workshop, Melbourne 2005", showed for the first time the role of a new antigenic system (MICA system), which could become as important as the HLA system in the rejection of organ and tissue grafts. Consequently, new criteria of recipient selection, as well as new immunosuppressive therapies, are being studied. These researches aim ultimately at better characterisation of recipients at risk of rejection while allowing therapeutic interventions that would improve the care of future transplanted patients.

This project is supported by The Kidney Foundation of Canada, the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Canada, the Muscular Dystrophy Association of France, and the FRSQ's Eye Health Network.

>> IMMUNOTOXICITY OF ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTANTS

Populations from Northern Quebec including Arctic depend on marine foods for their subsistence. As this source of feeding has been contaminated by the accumulation of chemical products and organochlorine compounds, negative effects on the immune system can result. The goal of this research is to develop and test tools for the evaluation of the immune response of populations exposed to these pollutants.

This project is supported by the FRSQ's Environmental Health Network and the Canada Northern Contaminants Program/Arctic Environmental Strategy.
